MICRONEEDLING & PRP
PRE/POST-PROCEDURE INSTRUCTIONS AND POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS

BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE

  • Do not have any other facial treatments within 14 days of treatment

  • Avoid NSAIDs (ex. Ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve, Naproxen, Aspirin) or other blood-thinning agents if possible, as taking them can increase your risk of prolonged bleeding and bruising

  • Stop products that include Vitamin C or Retinol at least 1 week prior to treatment

  • Avoid exfoliants at least 1 week prior to treatment

  • Avoid alcohol and excessive sun exposure 24-48 hours before treatment

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Your provider will apply a topical anesthetic to your skin prior to treatment to reduce any pain and discomfort.

Your skin will be pink or red in appearance for a few hours and possibly the next day following microneedling treatment, much like a sunburn, with some minor bleeding and bruising possible, depending on the aggressiveness of the procedure, i.e. the length of the needle used for the particular indication being treated and the number of times it is passed across the treatment area. Your skin may feel warm, tight, or itchy for the next 1-2 days. Applying A&D ointment can help with this.

If you get any small white bumps (milla), apply benzoyl peroxide directly onto the bumps with a q-tip.

Sunscreen spf 50 or higher is your best friend for this treatment and going forward (even on cloudy days).

Add a hat and sunglasses when the sun is stronger.

Drink plenty of water. If you can’t drink enough water, try eating some “watery” foods like melons, strawberries, peaches, broccoli, and celery. Pineapple and oranges are also good if you’re okay with more citrus content.

Only use the products recommended by VanityMD after your treatment.

Refrain from any other treatments in your treated area for at least 14 days.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS

Side effect or risks are minimal with microneedling and typically include minor flaking or dryness of the skin, with scab formation in rare cases.

Hyperpigmentation (darkening of certain areas of the skin) can occur and usually resolves after a month.

Temporary redness and mild sunburn effects may last up to 3-4 days.

Freckles may lighten and/or temporary or permanently disappear in treated areas

Other potential risks include crusting, itching, discomfort, bruising, infection, swelling and failure to achieve the desired result.

Common side effects of radiofrequency and non-radiofreqency microneedling include temporary redness, swelling, and sensitivity in the treated areas, as well as potential bruising or scabbing.

Possible side effects of PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) injections include swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site, infection, pain, and allergic reactions, though these are relatively rare.

Possible side effects of drawing blood for PRP injections include bruising, pain at the venipuncture site, lightheadedness, or fainting. With radiofrequency energy, potential damage includes burns, scarring, changes in skin pigmentation, or nerve damage if the procedure is not performed correctly.

Permanent scarring (less than 1%) is extremely rare.
