5 Ways Spring Cleaning Is Good for Your Health

Have you ever wondered why “Spring Cleaning” is a thing? Everyone has their own reasons for tidying up, but I personally think it has something to do with new beginnings. After being cooped up during the short days of winter, people are eager to throw open the windows, embrace the daylight, and enjoy a fresh start. But no matter what drives you to clean and de-clutter, I’ve got some good news that’s bound to motivate you even further: Spring Cleaning is actually good for your health! Take a look at these five ways that cleaning up this Spring can make you happier and healthier.

1. It Can Minimize Allergies

I wish there were a magic cure for allergies, but we can at least agree that minimizing allergy triggers and reducing symptoms is a pretty big win! If your windows have been closed throughout the winter months, chances are that the reduced airflow has allowed for the accumulation of dust and pet dander, which can aggravate allergy symptoms (and asthma!). A deep cleaning of furniture, carpets, curtains, windowsills, and baseboards will help you breathe easier.

2. Your Focus and Mood Will Improve

Over time, we all accumulate stuff. Lots and lots of stuff. When we start to get too surrounded by excess and clutter, it can really bog us down. During your Spring cleaning, I encourage you to get rid of things you no longer need and to organize the rest. Tidying up your space will help you to feel more relaxed and better able to focus. Reorganizing and rearranging things can also boost your mood by shifting the way you view things and creating the physical manifestation of a fresh start.

3. You Ditch Mold and Mildew

Mold and mildew are persistent, and they love to pop up any chance they get. Although you probably check your bathroom regularly for signs of mold and mildew, people often forget to check their window sills. Moisture frequently accumulates here during the winter because of increased precipitation and condensation. Doing a thorough inspection and cleaning will help you to eliminate spores from the air that could be negatively impacting your health.

4. It Gets You Moving!

You’ll be amazed at how many calories you can burn after a day or weekend of intense cleaning. If you’ve got a smartwatch or other fitness device, strap it on and get to work! Deep cleaning involves a lot of moving around, bending, squatting, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling, all of which will get your heart pumping. Just make sure you listen to your body and follow safety protocols for lifting and moving heavy objects.

5. It Eliminates Hazards

If you’ve been meaning to move those boxes away from the back door or to finally pack away that string of Christmas lights, this is your sign to do it now! Excess clutter and other safety hazards can be addressed during Spring cleaning and will prevent accidents and injuries.
